Additional Training
(after Urology Specialisation)
-
Further expertise in the minimally invasive treatment of renal stone disease, bladder conditions, enlarged prostate, and prostate cancer. This included proficiency in robotic-assisted and laparoscopic surgery, laser stone surgery utilising Holmium and Thulium laser technologies, and cutting-edge prostate biopsy techniques, such as robotic-targeted MRI fusion transperineal prostate biopsy.
This training was complemented with a rotation through Kuala Lumpur general hospital, where he undertook advanced training in PCNL (Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy). The high prevalence of stone disease in Malaysia has fostered advanced techniques that are less common in Australia, providing Dr Ross with unique skills to offer more effective and comprehensive treatments for complex cases.
-
Dr Ross pursued an advanced global clinical fellowship to deepen his expertise in prosthetic urology, sexual health, and penile surgery. Recognising the value of learning from diverse international leaders, he completed multiple specialised fellowship programs at some of the world’s most renowned centres of excellence. These programs provided unparalleled exposure to the latest treatments and surgical techniques for conditions such as erectile dysfunction, Peyronie’s disease, low testosterone, penile implant surgery, and other aspects of male sexual dysfunction.
-
In Spain, Dr Ross Calopedos had the privilege of training at the prestigious Lyx Institute in Madrid, a leading multidisciplinary centre for urology and Europe’s highest-volume referral centre for Peyronie’s disease. During his time there, he gained extensive hands-on experience in managing Peyronie’s disease, including conservative treatments such as oral medications and physical therapy, as well as intralesional therapies.
He further refined his surgical skills, performing a variety of corrective procedures, including Plication, Nesbit, and Yachia techniques, penile implants, and complex grafting surgeries using autologous rectus fascia rather than synthetic graft materials. His experience also encompassed the placement of both penoscrotal and infrapubic inflatable penile prostheses (IPP) and malleable penile prostheses (MPP).
Under the guidance of Dr Eugenio Cerezo, the world’s foremost expert in penile duplex ultrasound, Dr Ross developed a profound understanding of penile anatomy and function. This training allowed him to accurately diagnose and manage complex cases of erectile dysfunction with precision and confidence.
Additionally, under the mentorship of Dr. Ignacio Sola, Dr Ross expanded his proficiency in minimally invasive treatments for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). He mastered Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP) and the newer Minimally Invasive Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (MiLEP).
-
In London, Dr Ross worked closely with Professor David Ralph, a globally recognised leader in erectile dysfunction. This focused training provided exposure to a wide range of advanced reconstructive procedures, including:
Management of severe Peyronie’s disease: Plaque excision and grafting without a penile tourniquet, ventral corporoplasty, and penile disassembly techniques.
Genital Reconstructive surgery: Genital lymphedema repair, buried penis reconstruction, and treatments for post-prostatectomy climacturia, such as the mini-Jupette procedure.
Cosmetic and functional procedures: Suprapubic lipectomy, abdominoplasty, scrotoplasty, phallopexy, and specialised scrotectomy techniques.
-
Dr Ross trained under Professor Koenraad van Renterghem, a globally respected innovator and leader in urological prosthetics and men’s health. This fellowship provided invaluable hands-on experience in advanced penile implant techniques, particularly for complex cases involving multiple urological conditions. This training provided exposure to cutting-edge procedures, including:
Simultaneous double implant surgery: For men with concurrent erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence, particularly in post-prostate cancer patients, both an inflatable penile prosthesis (IPP) and an artificial urinary sphincter (AUS) can be placed through a single incision. This technique, pioneered by Professor van Renterghem, reduces the number of surgical incisions from three to one, minimising time under general anaesthesia and recovery times.
Advanced penile prosthesis techniques: Focused on Peyronie’s correction, penoscrotal penile prosthesis insertion, and alternative reservoir placements.
-
During his training with Dr Dean Elterman, a renowned expert in minimally invasive therapies for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), Dr Ross gained hands-on experience with a range of cutting-edge treatments, including:
Aquablation: Robotic-assisted water jet therapy for precise removal of prostate tissue.
Rezum: Water vapor therapy offering effective symptom relief with minimal invasiveness.
Optilume BPH Catheter System: A novel approach using drug-coated balloon dilation to alleviate obstruction.
UroLift: Prostatic urethral lift to open the urinary pathway while preserving sexual function.
iTind: Temporary Nitinol Device implantation to reshape the prostatic urethra and relieve symptoms.
These advanced, minimally invasive treatments are designed to provide effective symptom relief while preserving sexual function, offering ideal solutions for men seeking alternatives to traditional surgery.
-
Dr Ross trained under Dr Paul Perito, the world’s highest-volume penile implant surgeon, global leader and renowned innovator in men’s health, mastering the advanced minimally invasive infrapubic approach for penile prosthesis insertion. This technique, pioneered by Dr Perito, significantly reduces recovery time while optimising patient outcomes.
During his time at the Perito Clinic in Miami, a world-class centre for men’s health, Dr Ross gained hands-on experience in:
Penile Prosthesis Surgery: Performing over 200 penile implant procedures using the minimally invasive infrapubic technique.
Reservoir Placement Techniques: Including the innovative midline technique, enabling safe reservoir placement in men regardless of surgical history, through the same 2.5-3 cm incision.
Complex and Non-Standard Cases:
Salvage malleable penile prosthesis placement following infection
Glans hypermobility correction.
Obturator fenestration for corporal fibrosis.
Endocavernotomy for erectile body stenosis.
The Perito "Scratch" technique for minimally invasive correction of penile curvature and deformities.
Dr. Ross also became Australia’s leading expert in the UroFill® penile girth enhancement technique, a non-surgical aesthetic solution for men seeking enhancement without compromising function. This innovative procedure allows for safe, effective, and minimally invasive penile girth augmentation without general anaesthesia.
By mastering these advanced surgical and non-surgical techniques, Dr Ross offers men in Australia a unique approach to urological care. His expertise addresses a wide range of urological and men’s health concerns, from erectile dysfunction and Peyronie’s disease to aesthetic and functional enhancements, ensuring personalised care with precision and compassion.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
-
A urologist is a specialist surgeon who diagnoses and treats anyone with a problem with their adrenals, kidneys, ureters, bladder, prostate, urethra and any of the male reproductive organs. This includes common conditions like kidneys stones, prostate problems, urinary tract infections and erectile dysfunction.
-
Becoming a urologist in Australia involves a rigorous educational and clinical pathway. First, aspiring doctors complete a 5-6 year medical degree, then work as junior doctors in hospitals for at least 2 years, gaining essential clinical experience in all aspects of inpatient care. Next, candidates apply to a highly competitive surgical specialty program, where applications from doctors across Australia and New Zealand are evaluated based on research, tertiary education, clinical performance, referee reports and interviews. The urology training program, jointly overseen by the Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, requires an additional 5-6 years of practical training, comprehensive examinations, and rigorous performance assessments. This extensive training ensures that specialists are fully equipped to deliver high-quality urological care. For those seeking further expertise, additional subspecialisation options are available.
-
Yes, urologists treat female patients. While urology is often associated with male reproductive health, urologists also diagnose and manage conditions affecting the female urinary tract. This includes urinary tract infections (UTIs), overactive bladder, incontinence, pelvic pain, and other disorders.
-
Although both specialists address aspects of pelvic health, their training, focus, and the conditions they treat differ significantly. Gynaecologists focus on the female reproductive system, managing menstrual health, pregnancy, childbirth, and disorders of the uterus, ovaries, and other reproductive organs. Urologists are specialists of the female bladder, urethra and upper urinary tract.
-
While both specialists focus on kidney health, urologists are surgeons who treat issues of the urinary tract, often using surgical procedures when necessary. Nephrologists, on the other hand, focus on the medical management of kidney diseases and systemic conditions affecting kidney function.
